CASE STUDY
Open Energi
Freelance marketing lead · Nov 2023 – Apr 2024 · Energy & sustainability tech
The brief
Open Energi had recently been acquired by BP. With a period of significant change underway, they needed a freelance marketing lead to come in fast, maintaining brand momentum externally while keeping the internal team informed, aligned, and engaged. The centrepiece of that effort was a major in-person showcase bringing together staff, stakeholders, and the wider BP team.
"Lucy delivered a key project, the design and delivery of a showcase for the business with our investor, which was very well received."
— Andy Rees, CEO, Open Energi
What I did
I worked across two distinct channels at once. Externally, I managed Open Energi's LinkedIn presence; writing, scheduling, and reporting on content while navigating BP's strict brand guidelines. Internally, I ran their Viva Engage communications, keeping the team connected through a period of transition with structured, well-written updates that actually got read.
Working closely with the CEO, I handled the creative and logistics end-to-end; branded print materials, name badges, event maps, welcome signage, a digital version of the showcase for international teams, and on-the-day photography. Over 100 people attended and deemed it a great success!
"She worked to our brief but is also able to elevate and bring her own creative lens to produce highly impactful and intentional work."
— Loan Blewett, Head of People, Open Energi
What landed
The showcase was described by attendees as highly interesting, informative, and professionally run (not to mention fun!)
On LinkedIn, one post alone hit 4,960 impressions with a 9.48% engagement rate. And the internal comms work left the team with clear structure, consistent messaging, and a content foundation to build on.
